Celebrity Island: Bear Grylls' new show shocks viewers with foulmouthed stars - but sparks only three complaints
Bear Grylls' latest TV show Celebrity Island appeared to shock viewers after its foulmouthed stars used the f-word 52 times – but sparked only three official complaints.
Fans of the popular show, which in the latest outing sees celebrities try to survive on a remote island, took to social media to blast the “horrendous” swearing of the stars.
A total of 66 swear words were used in the 45-minute programme, including “s***”, “b****” and “f***”.
Foulmouthed celebrities such as Ryan Thomas, 33, and Olympian Iwan Thomas proved some of the worst offenders, with a swear word roughly every 40 seconds on the show.
But while viewers took to social media to vent their anger, a spokeswoman for regulator Ofcom told the Standard it had received only three complaints.
Louise Bragan posted on Twitter: “Watching Celebrity Island on catch-up - How much swearing? Shame as the kids really wanted to see it, they asked to switch it off.”
One Twitter user, known only as Kneewax, said: “OK, I'm no prude, at least I don't think I am. But the swearing on #CelebrityIsland is horrendous. Sorry, Bear, turning off.”
Paul Spencer said: “Had enough of Bear Grylls Celebrity Island already.... far too much swearing... do they only know the f-word?”
The standard version of the Channel 4 show, The Island With Bear Grylls, set a new British record last year after contestants swore 95 times on one episode.
A spokeswoman for Ofcom said it will consider whether to open an investigation after assessing the complaints.
Mr Thomas, who stars as Jason Grimshaw in TV soap Coronation Street, even took to Twitter to apologise for swearing so much on the show.
He said: “I hate it, so sorry, didn't even realise.”
A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: "The series is appropriately scheduled after the watershed, was preceded by a strong language flagging, and reflects the experiences of those on The Island."
